The Feilding Star. THURSDAY, AUGUST 20, 1885. Private Sidings
As all matters connected with the timber trade are of vital importance to this district, we would suggest that a public meeting be called by the Mayor — or his locum tenens — in order that the subject of the impost on private sidings to sawmills be considered, and resolutions passed condemning it. At one time we thought that it would be better for the sawmillers to take the initiative and hold a meeting among themselves, but on furthur consideration we have arrived at the conclusion that as the settlers generally on the Manchester block are so deeply interested in the welfare of an industry which has been the backbone of this settlement for the last ten years, they ought to make common cause with the persons directly sufferring from the injustice. We hope our suggestion will be adopted at an early date, for the time is rapidly passing away in which the necessary action must be taken. In all cases of this kind delays are fatal. The apathy of a day may allow an opportunity to pass which never can be taken again.
