[.PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION. Auckland, August 20. A man named Whitman was brought into Cambridge who had lost his way in the plains in {going from Taupe to Fort Galatea. He wandered about for 12 days. He is in a weak state and is not expected to recover. Wellington. August 19. In consequence of the events whijh have recently happened in connection with the hospital (says the New Zealand Times) Dr and Mrs Chilton left the institution yesterday morning. Nearly all the members of the working staff gathered in the hall to wish farewell to the late surgeon and iris wife. At 7 o'clock in the evening the whole nursing staff, except three, were summarily dismissed by Dr Levinge, Acting House Surge«n. They all declare that they had no previous warning and say that the greater number, being young uu married women, had no homes to go to. — [Mr Stout, when the case was represented to him, at ©nee gave orders that the dismissed nurses shoul be readmitted to the hospital for the night.] Wellington, This Day. Tenders for the Hunterville contract at the southern end of the North Island Main Trunk line were opened this morning. There are nine tenders. No infermation has jet been disclosed as to the amount of the tenders. Napieb, This Day. A small tradesman named Paul Victor was caught early this morning making his exit from the back of Banner and Liddle's auction room. For a long time all sorts of articles have been missed from these premises nnd the police were set to watch. On searching Victor's house it was found fairly stocked with stolen goods. When caught he was coolly carrying a lamp iv each hand. (from oub own cobeespondent.) Te Aboha August 18. The Waiau bridge was opened this morning. Mr Thomas Bradley drove the mail coach to connect with the Auckland train. There was a goad number of lookers-on and passengers. The coach got safely across.
