A Contradiction
Some time ago we published a* extract from an English paper, in which it was said certain Conservative leaders have refused to allow Dissenters to build or lease places in which to hold their religious services en their several properties. The attention of the Marquis of Salisbury aad the Earl ot Carnaivon having been called to these statements made at the recent meeting at Nottingham to the effect that their lordships had refused to allow chapels to be built on their estates, Mr R. T. Gunton has written from 20, Arlington street, . S.W-, as follows : — * I am directed by the Marquis ef Salisbury to acknowledge the receipt of your letter. In reply lam to say that Lord Salisbury offered to let a piece of land which he thought suitable. The applicant, however, preferred another which Lord Salisbury could not part with." Dating frem Highclere Castle, Newbury, Lord Carnarvon wrote: — "I only delayed an answer to your letter till I could hear from my agent, te whom I wrote in order to be perfectly certain as te the facts. There is no truth whatever in the statement as to the truth of which you inquire, and indeed, so absolutely devoid of truth is it that my agent tells me that no application even has been made te him for such a piece of land."
