It is believed that Russia will keep the Zulfikar Pass question open until the next general election, wben they will endeavor to threw discredit on the Tories in regard to the present negotiations. Received August 6, 1.40 a.m. Bombay, August 4The Afghan troops have moved considerable reinforcements to the Zulfikar Pass. The Russian forces continue to arrive at Penjdeh. London, August 6. The Marquis. of Salisbury made a statement in the House of Lords last night on the Russo- Afghan frontier situation. Lord Salisbury informed the House .that the question of the occupancy, of the Zulfikar Pass was still unchanged, Russia still dissehting from the 1 contentions put forward by the British Foreign, Office !bn tikesubject.^ His Lordship added it was not the intention of Her Majesty's Q»vernment to modify the existing agreement with the Ameer so as to provide for the occupancy of a position in Afghanistan, but that at the same time the fortification of the Indian frontier would be vigorously proceeded with regardless of other powers.
Captain Edwin telegraphs— Barometer further rise everywhere, but falling after 1 12 hours. Telegrams for frost have been aent to all stations. For the headmastership of the Terrsrs Knd School, Palmerston. Mr D. H. Guthrie, at present of Haleombe, has beea selected by the committee. The applicants included Messrs Grant, Flood, Lee, and Guylee. j Messrs Halcombe and Sherwill's stock ! sale, was well attended. An unusually large quantity of stock was yarded. The bidding wsi tolerably brisk, and the prices, especially for fat stock had a decided upward tendency.
