The Lyttelton Harbour Board at its meeting to-day passed the following reio Lution : — That this board, representing nearly the whole of the district of North Canterbury which will be effected under the contemplated arrangement now before Parliament for the construction of the East and West Coast Railway, is of opinion that the present opportunity for the speedy carrying out of this most important colonial work should not be lost, even if the district mutt be rated for the purpose. Asi atement of the Harbour Board accounts for the last six mouths showed there had been an increase in the rates of £1,798 as compared with the corresponding period of last year. The City Council, at a special meeting thin erening, passed the following resolution : — " That the two local government bills, the Local Bodies Finance and Power Bill, and tbe Chriatchurch Aid Bill are unfair in principle, and calculated to press unduly upon the larger and more porulous centre* throughout the colony," " That the proposed subsidy of 10 shillings for every pound towards the maintenance of hospitals, &0., is inadequate, and should be increased to pound to pound, and that charitable aid bodies should be endowed with substantial grants of land.
