The S«nth Australian House of As« serably last night adopted a measure providing for the payment of members on tke Canadian system, which provides for the payment «f so much per diem, with deductions in case «f absence. Hobabt, July 30. The Colonial Treasurer, the Hon W. H. Burgess, introduced his financial statement last night. He stated in the course of his speech £30,000 had been expended during the last year for defence purposes. It is proposed to float a new loan of £1,000,000. BBIBBA.NE JuW 31. The Legislative Councl last night re* jected the Bill sent up from the Assembly providing for payment of members. It is probable, however, that the sum required will be plaeed upon the Estimates. Sydney, July 31. A considerable sensation has been cavsed in artistic circles in this city by the discovery that the picture "Roll call," which was purchased by the trustees of the Art Gallery as a replica bv Mi»s Thompson of her celebrated picture is only a French copy and not a genuine replica by the artist herself.
