[Bevtbb's Tbleosaim.l London, July 28. The Government are in receipt of a despatch from Brigadier-General Grenf ell, commanding the Egyptian army, in which he states that a messenger has arrived at Cairo with the intelligence that the Mahdi has been succeeded by Abdoolah.
In the House of Commons last night, the Hon. B. Bourke, Secretary for Foreign Affairs, announced, in reply to a question, that Her Majesty's Government were taking steps to relieve the beleaguered garrison at Xassala.
The pay of Colonel Whitmore ai commander «f the New Zealand forces will be £700 per annum, equal to that of a coLmipl in the United States army which v 3500 dollars.
As we go to press we lean of a sad accident happening to a young man engaged at Messrs Bailey's sawmill at Halcembe, by which as we understand part of his hand was eat off by the circular saw. Captain Edwin telegraphs to-day:— Barometer farther rise at all Dlaces south of Hokitika and Lyttelton, but falling again after 16 hours at all other places. Sea very heavy on eastern coast after 12 hoar*. Warnings for southerly gales and rain hare been sent to all stations north •f Timara and Hekititika. In the report of the mult of the Pupils Teachers Examination for this district we notice the following :— Class 3— Elisabeth Diamond, Makino school, 648 marks, 54 0 per cent., failed. Ellen Prendegast, Feildin*.', 632 marks, s26 per cent., failed. Among the sncoessfnl candidates not in the employment of the Education Board appears the name «f Miss Maggie, Barthalemew,- ef the Turakina Classical School with 442 marks, 384 per cent.
