A New Chaffcutter

In the' Otago Daily Times of the 1 lth instant special reference is made to a chaffcutfcitig machine lately turned out by Messrs Reid and Gray, of Dunedin, for;aespat!ch to Auckland. Iv its construction this machine differs considerably from those in common use, and the advantages claimed for it are greater speed in cutting and corresponding quiekuess in bagging. Several patented improvements are noticed in the bagging apparatus. To prevent waste of chaff while bags are being changed, a brake is fitted upon the screwpress, which, stopping it instantaneously, prevents the chaff being forced through the delivery box while the screw is stopped to change the bags. The machine being provided with a sinutter-riddle, all sorrel and dock seeds, as well as dust and smut and very five chaff are removed from the chaff proper, and this alone is an imp rove me lit which will be appreciated by owners of stock. The cavings or long straws in the chaff are delivered behind the machine; the dust, &c, underneath. The brake on the screwpress has been patented, as well as the mouth-piece, which is in one piece and easily renewable. The one now uuder notice has a 12in. mouth-piece, but a larger size cau be made without increasing the size of the frame of the machine It is claimed 120 bags per hour cau be turned out. The whole concern is mounted ou four wheels. The price is under £60. A Parlianxentry, correspondent says : — A proniinunt member of the Opposition informs mo that Jthe relations between Major Atkinson and his former Ministerial colleagues are much strained in consequence of Mai or Atkinson's endeavour to arrange a compact with Sir Julius Yogel last session. There is probably no art of industrj which requires — for the production of good work -greater care and attention t« details t|ma 2oe» the art of photograph y. The public are little aware ef the numerous appliance* and prece'sci used in a UMt«class photogr«phic establishment. A visit' to Mr Martin's stuiin at Wangaßiui will prove this te be *o, for it is here ire find numerous rooms, each having its own departmental work and a staff of aKsistanls to carrj on thai work. We also find electricity is employed in producinc thcbeaiuiful stippled effect for .which Mr Martin's work is so iuuch admired. But the most interesting and, we mu«t say, to our uiiad, the mo*t com plicated process is that of enuMiellioi; ; the marvellous beauty imparted to the photograph by , this . process is truly astonishing, and we are assured by Mr Martin that the cnaiaelljnn aot only produces this beautiful appearance, but renders the picture permanent by means of Us air-tights and damp-proof coatiag. A visit to Wanganui, if for ' nothing else than to' be photograiihed at Mr Martin's, would, be a highly satisfactory way of spending a day.— L Advt.]
