One of them held Mechlenberg by the throat while tbe other rifled his pockets, and the pair got off with £12 cash. T. J. Waters, Secretary of the Waste Lands Board, who has been in the colony since 1846, and a Government official for 25 years, died yesterday. The contract for the completion tor section No. 1 of the Thames Valley aad Rotorua railway was signed to-day by Mr Fallew. The price is £27-043. Operations commence immediately. The body of Timothy Doile, one of the men lest ia the boat accident near tbe Defence Works a fertnight age, was feund on the beach at Evans' Bay this merning. Mr Tola and Mr Buckley, commit sionors in the Bryccßusden case, returned te Wellington on Saturday, having completed the taking ef evidence at Wanganui. About fertj witnesses wenexamined. It is not improbable that the commission will be resumed ia Wellington, and medical evidence will be given as to the exhumatien and examination ef the remains ef those who were alleged to be mnrdered. Mr Bryce has not decided whether he will go home ; but, if not. he will present himself for examination in Wellington. The evidence is to reach London before November. The Minister of Justice will shortly submit to the Cabinet a proposal for the employment of shorthand reportcs in the Supreme Courts. j The allotment ef space in the main building of the New Zealand Exhibition is almost completed. The delay has arisen through the toial applications exceeding the amount first provided for. The exhibition will only be opened on two evenings in the week, when concerts are to be given. It is alleged hy two captains of steamers, wbo left here on Friday night, that there was ne light exhibited at Feacarrow lightboase. The Har-eur Board intend holding a stnct investigation into .the matter. The counsel for the New Zealand Rifle Association, in an action brought against them by Lieutenant Purnell, of Wanganui. have filed a statement containing a general denial of the plaintiff's claim, inasniuba as the decision of tbe Executive Committee bring final, the plaintiff could not questioi.
