TO THB EDITOR OF THE STAB. Sir, — Eeferring to your sub-leader of the 12th instant, and to the remarks made by your correspondent ' ' Thrift," I would like to say a few words. The arguments adduced in favour oHhe formation of a local .Building Society appear to meet with the approval of a large section of the public ; at anyrate all whom I have heard speak on, the matter, while recognising the absolute / necessity which existsfor the operations of a local society, speak in tHe most hopeful strain of its prospects. itoubtless there are some who deprecate' the advantages offered by such societies, bul I think it will be found, that these are men of an undesirable class who always fail in their own affairs and therefore seel:' to' place a damper on the enterprise of others. ,; As. a hpiiseholder myself I pan, s^peak; feelingly OB the want of habitable dwellings; in the town, and of the great inconvenience that a tenant is.often 1 put to by reason of his having to mate shift with the scant accommodation offered by the first house which becomes On this head complaints are* loud and frequent.
