A Phantom Ship

I ■+. It seems that there is a mysterious steamer cruising about the straits somewhere. A. message was received ou Suoday by the Secretary of Telegraphs from the operator at Wakapuaka, stating that a large steamer, showing a number of tights, had been seen off the cable station about 7.30 on Saturday evening. On Monday it was added that she had been seen ia the offing early ob Sunday mornjag, and appeared to be a man-of-war. It has been assumed that she was H.M.S Espiegle, but there is nothing to prove this. If she i« the same vessel re parted as having been seen off Otaki a fortnight ago, and since that as having been seen in the Pelorus Sound, it is singular that if an English man-of-war she should »ot have called at any port for orders or to . learn the position of affairs in Europe.
