The Feilding Star. TUESDAY, APRIL 28, 1885. The Premier
The speeches recently made by the Hon. Mr Stout on the subject of land nationalisation have not added to his popularity in Canterbury, and the Christchurch Press accuses him of taking an unfair advantage of his position to further his own political opinions, contrary to pledges made at the hustings, when the representatives were returned for the purpose of dealing with practical questions' affecting the progress and settlement of the country. Political fads were to be put aside altogether, and a new era of prudent Government commenced. When Mr Stout became the head of the Ministry it was distinctly understood that advanced radical opinions were to be kept out of sight for the time being. Mr Stout is openly accused of using his position to propagate views which are certainly not acceptable to the majority of the House of Representatives, or the majority of the people, and he can be charged with making an unwarrantable use of the position he occupies as Premier of the colony, and he will have to give an account of what he has done, and attempted to do, during the coming session We do not think, however, that any laches of the Premier will seriously affect the Ministry. The whole colony is at present satisfied with Sir Julius, who is ipse facto the head of the Government, and next in public estimation stands Mr Ballance who has earned the gratitude of the country by his scheme of land settlement, while the other members of the Ministry have certainly done much, to earn the esteem of their several constituencies. In Parliament Mr Stout will have to " fight for his own hand," as the want of sympathy between him and Sir Julius Yogel, as well as divergence of political views, makes it impossible he can expect support in his "fads" by his colleagues.
