Committal of the Countess De La Torre
On February 17, at the Kensington Petty Sessions, before Mr W Bird Mid other magistrates, Mr G. C. Harding, derk of the vestry, made an application for a committal order against the Countess De la Torre in , default of paying a fine of £7 imposed upon her for keeping a large number qf eats. and dogs in her residence at Pembroke Square, Earl's Court.— The Gountess^was not. in attendance. — The "Chairman wished to be informed if the distress warrant had been enforced: •Mr Harding stated that there were not ''sufficient goods to answer the warrant. . He called the inspector wh* proved that Che Countess had private .means, It was .also stated that, notwithstanding the prohibitory , ord«rgraated :by the Bench, a number of eats and dogs were still kept in the •house, Slid this smeil was most offensive. The Chairman doubted whether the Bench had the power to grant a committal order unless additional evidenced means was adduced - — Mr Harding said he had no other evidence, • but he pointed out the ■ section of the Act which gave the - 'magistrates, power' |n such a' case.-r-The Bench thfn ordered tiie Countess r 'tobeoomi^itted^p gaol for one month.
