Manchester Street Bridge
We are glad to observe that last night the Borough Council retraced its steps with regard to the abrupt terminating of Mr Hammond's contract for the erection of the Manchester Btreet bridge. The action taken by the Council, or those iv whose hands the matter, was entrusted was hasty and ill-advised, and if the course had been continued the Borough would have again been dragged into expensive litigation. The ratepayers cannot afford this, they are already sufficiently burdened. We heartily endorse the action of the Council in making an amicable arrangement with Mrs Blackmore anent the removal of the debris of the Warwick street bridge from her property. It w'll be observed in our report of the proceedings that Cr Goodbehehe registered his protest against this as illegal. No doubt he has good grounds for his opinion, but we have no doubt we could find several legal gentlemen who would prove to their own satisfaction that the action of the Council is legal. Public opinion is de-. cidedly against the money of the ratepayers being squandered in lawsuits which may be almost invariably avoided by the exercise of a little tact, firmness, and dis- ■ cretion.
