The Feilding Star. SATURDAY, MARCH 21, 1885. The Ranger
In the report of the proceedings of the Borough Council meeting held on Thursday evening last, letters of complaint were lodged by certain burgesses against the Banger, for either exceeding or neglecting his duty. The Council very properly declined to interfere with the Ranger in the execution of his duties. If anything would satisfy the public — who are the sufferers from the streets and squares of the Borough being used as private grazing grounds — that the Ranger is endeavoring to the best of his ability to do bis duty, it is the numerous complaints made against him by the owners of cattle resident within the town boundaries. Where he fails slightly is in cases of supposed leniency or favoritism. We use the word " supposed " advisedly, because we do not know of any one owning cattle wh ; ch are allowed to stray or be driven on the streets, who has not had the pleasure of contributing towards the revenue by impounding fees. People fall into the common error of supposing that when their neighbors' cattle are impounded the Ranger is strictly doing his duty, but when their stock are subjected to the same restraint, personal animus is being exhibited and they are much injured individuals. Cattle have no right to be at large in the streets unless under the charge of a competent person, and then for driving purposes only. If the Ranger is wise he will pound every stray beast — as per schedule of the Impounding Act — that comes within his ken. It will be better for himself as well as the burgesses whose servant he is. Owners of stock should also assist him by endeavoring to keep them off the roads as much as is possible. They would then be spared much unnecessary vexation.
