BOROUGH AFFAIRS.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAB. Sir, — I notice with regret the proposed action of the Borough Council to strike a j rate of sixpence in the £ for the purpose of liquidating the present overdraft at the bank. I fear the present Councillors have not thought of the expenae and chance of rejection by the burgesses of such a rate. It is my opinion that the more the property in Feilding is rated, the less will bo its marketable value. Take Palmeraton with its present ordinary rate and library rate, making a total of 1/1£ in the £, and then compare the price of property there with the price of property in Feilding, and any one will see that the price is fifty per cent, more in Palmerston, where the rates are' low, to Feilding, where the rates are at present so high. And yet tho Council is about taking steps to increase the present high rates. Would it not be better if the Council worked within their means, and to do so and tide over the present difficulties, if it discontinued spending on the "ordinary account," except for salaries, for a space of gay three or four months, when the new rate and the hotel and auctioneers' licenses will have come in, and by their receipt the present overdraft would be reduced by something like £200. — I am, &c, Eatepayek.
