Sir Julius Vogel
The Post, in an article on the speech of Sir Julius Vogel at Auckland, says it was a decidedly interesting one, distinguished for its sound, practical, good sense. The was one feature of the address which is remarkable, and that is its thorough practical character. On the broad platform of general policy the speech will greatly increase and confirm public confidence in the Ministry, in which Sir Julius represents the practical and utilitarian element that tempers the theoretical philosophy of the Premier, Mr Stout. With regard to the other subjects touched upon, the Treasurer's remarks will commend themselves to public approval on most of the points, although the Post does not agree with him in regard to the Colony undertaking the East and West Coast Middle Island Railway, and has doubts of the wisdom of a new San Francisco mail contract. The Post concludes by saying : — " His generous eulogy of the administration of his colleagues, the Ministers of Land and Native Affairs and Public Works, was thoroughly well-deserved. Altogether, the speech will raise Sir Julius Vogel himself, as well as the Government to which he belongs, in public estimation.
