The steamer Doric arrived at Hohart from London yesterday, and left this morning for Auckland. The Te Aro licensing election resulted in four of the five being returned in favour of the publicans. Palmebston Nobth, This Day. A bush fire destroyed a five-roomed I house at Kairanga on Wednesday owned by John Burmeister. Insured for £125 in the New Zealand office. It was unoccupied. Auckland. This Day. Mr Maeral, of Mangere, has received a further threatening letter concerning the agrarian disputes. He is allowed a month to wind up hit worldly affairs, after which he will be a dead man. The detectives have hitherto failed te discover the authors. Chbistchubch, This Day. The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand opened tcaigbt. The Rev. Jas. Treadwell of Wanganui was elected moderator. In his opening address he laid special stress on the necessity of increased activity ia church work, expressing tbe opinion that the number of elders in the con.regatioc. should be largely increased, and their sphere of usefulness made more general. A rather serious stabbing ease took place near Greenhsm, Burton estate, Southbridge, on Monday night. A young man named Fred William Atwood met T. J. Carr, and mistaking bim for another man against whom he had a bad feeling, stabbed him. inflicting two serious wounds in the right arm. He was brought before Mr R. B. Willis and remanded till the 20th of February. Ross. This Day. At a public meeting of the Ross United Company's late employes, on j strike, resolutions for the establishment ' iof a miners' association in Ross were ' earned, and an agreement, provisions of . I which bound signers to uphold the eight hours system, was drawn up in the hall , and signed by 60 miners.
