Owing to the press of matter several advertisements and articles aro held over. An important notice from the poundkeeper at Awahuri appears elsewhere. The Italian Government are preparod to 6end 35,000 troops to the Soudan if necessary. Tho Makino Choose and Butter Company commenced operations in tho manufacture of cheese to-day. There is an addition made to-day to the advertisement of the Kiwitea Road Board. Tenders are invited for metalling a portion of Wilson's line. We are pleased to learn that several of our local producers are applying for space in the forthcoming Colonial Industrial Exhibition. Referring to the projected Young Men's Mutual Improvement Association, a public meeting on the subject is to be held, particulars of which will probably be advertised in our next issue. The weather of tho past few days has been very favorable for bush burning, and several fires have been started in the district. One large fire in the Harbor Block, and another in Kiwitea are burning to-day. There will be an alteration in the train service on Friday, the 13th instant. The usual train from Wanganui wili have at 7 a.m., and be one hour earlier at all stations, arriving in Foxton at I p.m. ■ The reason for this change is not gencully known. Constable Gillespie left for his new sphere of duty — Waitara — on Saturday evening by train. It must be a source of great satisfaction for him to know that he takes with him the good opinion of the most respectable settlers of the whole district. More it is unnecessary to say. Applications at this office for the maps and plans of the Wellington-Manawatu ; railway land for sale in the FitzHerbert Block, and the town of Linton, have been rery numerous. As the land is of magnificent quality buyers " cannot go wrong " in selecting a block oi a town section. On Wednesday evening next service will bo held at St. John's Church to celebrate the anniversary of the consecration of that building. Choral service will be held. The Eev. Mr Coppinger will preach the sermon. Several other clergymen from other parts of the diocese will take part in the proceedings. Early to bed and early to rise, are habits we certainly do not despise. They will make a man healthy, wealthy, and wise, provided he's honest and doesn't tell lies. But to every one who would prosper and rise, there is one other course we would strongly advise, and that is — • never neglect to advertise. On Tuesdny a little girl, one of the pupils at the Eangiora school (says the Christchurch Press), died from the effects of brain fever, brought on, it is supposed, by over zealous study. In her delirium before death supervened, she kept con- > tantly going over sums, writing lessons, geography, and other subjects which are found in the school table. The funeral of the late Mrs Child, which took place on Sunday last at theHalcombe cemetery, was largely attended. Upwards of 150 persons followed tho remains of the deceased to their last resting place. There were a good number from the surrounding district, including Feilding and the neighborhood. The Eev. Joshua Jones conducted the burial service of the Church of England. A case under the Licensing Act was heard before the E.M., Palmerston (south), lately, when the contention was upheld that "Yankee Grab" was not illegal, because there was no such game as the game of dice, though dice, counters, marbles, cards, and a variety of other things were used in playing- different games. The English Gaming Statute's supported this view; This I 'decision wilh bo a great comfort to hotel keepers, r. We (Napier Telegraph) learn that within the last few weeks a considerable number of applications have been made for thet lease of bush lands, for saw milling purposes. These applications have come from all parts of the* "colony, more especially for the fine totara lands in the immediate vicinity of the Tahoraite railway station. There is every pro-pectnow that the railway has actually " tapped " the forest of the speedy establishment of a large export timber trade
