Presentation to Mr Jackson

0« Saturday evening last the stewards of the Feilding Jockey Club met at the Denbigh Hotel. There was a good attendance. The Vice-President, H. L. Sherwill, Esq., occupied the chair. After some preliminary business had been settled, the Chairman said, that he had a most pleasing task to perform, which, however, was tinged with a feeling akin to sorrow and regret, inasmuch aB they were about to lose the services of ono whom it would be difficult to replace. At the last meeting of the members of the Club, it had been unanimously resolved to pass a vote of thanks to the -retiring Secretary, Mr W. Jackson, and also to present him with a testimonial of a more substantial nature as a further evidence of the esteem in which he was held, and of the strong appreciation the members had of the able manner in which he had conducted the affairs of the Club. He then presented Mr Jackson with a cheque for a very creditable amount. Mr Jackson in reply said that the duty of Secrotary to the Feilding Jockey Club had been a " Labor of love " performed without hope of reward. The chief causes of the prosperity of the Club, and the success which had hereto attended its* meetings, were the liberality of Messrs

Lethbridge and Downs, with the willing and able support the stewards had on all occasions given. He had every confidence that the Club would find in Mr ANTnoN V Fitzherbert and Mr Charles Bray, the new secretary and his assistant, gentlemen thoroughly competent to keep up the position of the Club. Ho was glad to say that he had assurances of support from tho owners of horses in every part of the coast, and he expected that a better field would be seen at Easter than on any previous meeting. The strict and impartial ruling of the officials of the club, ■ had, as they all know, been favourably commented on by several of the best sporting writers in the colony. He had every confidence that the reputation of the club would always maintain its ; high character. Mr Jackson then again ! thanked the donors of the testimonial, I and stated h© would ever remember ; Feilding and its people with pleasure and [ respect. We understand that on the same evening Mr Jackson was entertained at a supper at the private house of a gentleman resident at Awahuri.
