[becteb's telegbams.l London, January 6. The wool market'U quiet and arriva's to date tor next series of auctions now amount to 110,000 bales. The Admiralty deny that any orders hare been given to the Channel Squadron out of the ordinary course. It is stated that Spain has annexed the territory on the west coast (query, west coast of Africa ?), lying between Capes Moreton and Oeste. Mr Chamberlain addressed his constituents at Birmingham to-day. In the course of his speech, he referred to the question of annexation in the Pacific, and declared that England was not entitled to prevent foreigners from colonizing, but, if the rights of Australasia were threatened the whole power of England must be extended in defence. The power of Australasia, he said, would be paramount in the Pacific within the next half century. Tenders for the Auckland loan of £25,000 were opened yesterday. The tenders amounted altogether to £117,000. Tenders at 108 7-6ths will secure 21 per cent. Tenders above that amount will be allotted in full. The cargo of frozen mutton, comprising 14,000 carcases, ex Ruapehu, has been landed in good condition. The Hon. and Eight Rev. John Jackson, D.D., Bishop of London, died suddenly last night, aged 74. No proposal has yet reached the British Government for a conference to be held at Paris on the Egyptian question, and if such proposal were made the Imperial Government would refuse to accept. The International conference on the Congo question has resolved that, in future, sovereign Powers shall adopt measures to prevent slavery on the weit coast of Africa. Capetown, January 5. Intelligence has been received here that the Gosheunet (sic) are collecting arms, and it is believed that they intend to forcibly oppose Colonel Warren's advance into Bechuanaland, and that fighting will take place between the Gosheunes and British troops.
