Frozen Meat Trade
The N.Z.L. &M.A. Company, report under date, January 1 : — The decline in the value of N.Z. mutton in the London market referred to in our last issue is traceable to the extraordinary mildness of the season at Home, which has helped the fattening pastures to hold out much later in the year than usual. It may also be due in a measure to the new tactics adopted by the trade to palm off inferior English mutton by dressing and packing the carcases in bags to represent New Zealand mutton, and by importers from the Cotinent having sheep frozen to represent the prime article received from the Antipodes. That these means are being adopted ■we have indisputable evidence, but we do not despair ef consignees discovering a means of counteracting the effects of these clever frauds on the trade. Dukedqt. — Since our last report the mail steamer Kaikoura has left Fort Chalmers with 8,285 carcases mutton from the Burnside Refrigerating Works, and 240 from the works of Messrs Thomson Bros., Fort Chalmers. Chbistchubch. — Operations at the Belfast Works have gone on uninterruptedly during the month in the preparation of shipments for the Kaikoura (sailed. 19th December, 1971 carcases) and for the Tongariro, sailing in about a fortnight, with 7000 to 8000 carcases mutton, and 75 carcases beef. The sailing ship Canterbury has nearly completed her loading, and will get away in about 10 •days .with .9000 carcases mutton, shipped by Mr John Grigg.
