Deliberate Attempt at Murder

Auckland, This Day.
Between 9 and 10 on Sunday evening two pistol shots were heard at the end of Derby street. A man named John Brown, coffee stall-keeper, a negro, was discovered chasing another negro, named Thomas Brown, up Victoria street, where he fired two more shots at him. Some of the crowd chased the assassin, but, seeing a pistol in his hand were afraid to close with him. Two of the shots took effect on Brown one entering his chest, and the other penetrating his side. On being taken to Dr Dawson, it was discovered that one bullet was in the breast, its passage having been stopped by the breast-bone. After a little trouble it was extracted. The second bullet wound was over the first false rib on the left side, and the bullet passed through and out at the back. John Brown was arrested in a house in Abercromb'ie street. He made no resistance. The wounds are not considered dangerous unless inflammation or erysipelas sets in.
