A report is to hand that a large force under the Mahdi has entrenched itself at a point only two days' March from Merawi, to which place Lord WoJseley i« dcpatching troops from Korti. A detach* ment six hundred strong of the South Staffordshire Regiment leares Korti tomorrow, for Merawi. Telegrams to hand from the front report that a detachment of artillery has reached Korti, and preparations are proceeding tor the advance of all the troops that have arrived there on Meraweh, an important position on the Nile, about 30 miles to the northward of Korti. December 28. A messenger who left Khartoum a fortnight ago reports that intense distress prevails among the followers of the Mahdi. Many are famished and dying, and numbers are deserting: their leaders.
