• Thursday next being Christmas Day. the Feilding Stab will not be published. The Marlborough Times is now issued as a morning paper. A Juvenile Court of Foresters' is about to bo formed in Foil ding. Earl Morley will probably succeed Lord Loftus as Governor of Now South Wales. Christmas and New Yoar's Days will bo observed as close holidays at the Post Office. The hours on Boxing Day will bo from 9 a.m. till 10 a.tn. only. Tho additional room recently built on the Foresters' Hall, is to be used as a banquet or supper room, not for literary purposes as was first reported. We have to acknowledge receipt of The | Wanganui Collegian for November. As j usual it is well writton, well edited, and ■ well printed. The reading matter is interesting and amusing. Tho number of parcels which arrive in Feilding from the various branches in tho colonj r , of tho New Zealand Clothing Factory, is very considerable It is not improbable that a branch will bo opened in Feilding to centralize tho trade now done on the Manchester Block. The Eailway Departments' new works at the Makino bridgo are now all but completed. The man William Eddio who died from drowning in the Wanganui river tho other day could havo been resuscitated if (says tho Chroniclo) ordinary gumption had boon exorcisod by a poor fellow named David Bringans, who first discovered the body. Bringans was afraid to venture into two feet of water because ho could not swim. Bravo Bringans ! During a thundorstorm which took place at Kiwitea on Sunday last, a thunderbolt fell with a terrific report about four chains from tho back of Mr Currin's store. The phenomenon caused great alarm, and had the effect of an earthquake in the immodiate locality. A largo rimu tree was struck by the bolt, shivering it into > thousands of atoms, which were scattored for a distance of at least two chains around the tree. The fragments were charred, and tho stump of the treo took firo. On Christmas Evo many of tho youngsters i in Feilding will have a troat which they havo not hitherto experienced in their short livos, while many of tho oldsters 1 will see now inventions and pyrotechnic 1 combinations in the display of fireworks which will bo made in Mr Macarthur's paddock. All the latost improvements . are to bo found in Mr Newmans importations, and each is tho best of its kind. , The Feilding Brass Band will play selections during the evening. Tho fireworks display begins at 10 o'clock. The Upper Taonui School broke up for the Christmas holidays on Friday last, and advantage was taken of tho occasion to give the children a treat in the schoolhouso. There was a good muster of parents and friends besides scholars, and evoryone enjoyed themselves to the utmost. The mosquitoes wore somewhat plentiful, and at time troublesome, but their presence was not allowed to interfere with the general harmony of the party. The fete was chiefly managed by Mrs Joseph Garlick, and Mr McDonald, to whom every praiso is duo for their efforts to make a pleasant gathering, and the success which attended them. We need scarcely remind our readers of the splendid bill of fare which is provided for their delectation at the Public Hall on Boxing Night. The proceeds of the entertainment are to be devoted to the augmentation of the funds of tho Foilding Brass Band — a most worthy object as Mr Daw and his pupils have always been formost in assisting any good and charitable- object, when their services were requisite. As Mr Coles has tho sole management of all the stage business, it is porfectly safe to prognosticate that it will be well dono. As ho is also the best amatuor performer who has yet appeared before the Feilding public, and is a general favorite, he may expect to be warmly supported. Our old friend Mr Richardson appears on the bill, and will be heartily welcomed. Mr Childs, who is really a very oxcellent " nigger" will como all the way from Halcombc to assist. Mr W. Bray will sing, in his usual manly style, "Tho Stirrup Cup." Messrs Hawkins, Gosling, and other old favorites will put in on appearance. There are three WangaMiii ladies coining to assist, and wo aro given to understand that they arc artistes of considerable noto. All thiH will tend to make tho evening's amusement an attraction.
At a meeting of the Education Board yesterday, at Wanganui, the chairman stated that the members of the Board who next retire by rotation were Messrs Sansnn, Biker, and Taplin. The Ministerial circular of Ist December prohibiting civil servants attending meetings of trading companies in which t .ey may be shareholders has been withdrawn; new regulations are proposed. The L"ndon correspondent of the Auckland Star says: — Captain <'harles Bill, of Farley Hall, Cheadle and Wanganui, is sending out in the Tongariri), on November 22, a party of labourers who will go up to his station, Wangnnui, and settle there. Mr Christopher Brown's Cup will be awarded to the competitor who shall score the highest number of points on the whole of the events of Boxing Day Sports, to be counted as follows : -Ist prizes, 5 points; 2nd, 3 points; 3rd, 2 points. In the event of a tie the decision will be left in the hands of the committee. Mr Gichard, proprietor of the Smithfieli Butchery, corner of Manchester and Grey streets, calls attention by special advertisement to his Christmas display of meat, poultry &c, which takos place this evening. The Feildiug Brass Band will perform a selection in Mr Bray's paddock opposite MrGichards establishment at 8 o'clock. We are glad to congratulate the Manchester Rifles that their new uniforms h.-ive at length arrived in Feilding. Wo are informed by the Herald that—" Two cases from Hobson and Sons, London, containing the scarlet uniforms of the Manchester RifiV Volunteers, arrived per Stormbird, and were forwarded on to Feilding by Sergeant- Major Henry. This completes the whole of the rifle corps in the Wanganui ami Rangitikei districts with the regulation Imperial pattern uniform." It is understood that uniforms for the recruits now being admitted to the corps will be Bent for as 6oon as possible.
