♦ [beuter's telegrams.] Stdnet, December 22. At a fire which occurred to-day at Narnbri, in the north of this colony, three persons lost thoir lives. The damage to property by the fire is estimated at LB.OOO. A patient at the quarantine station, named Casey, has died from small-p. x. No fresh match has vet been arranged between Beach and Clifford in place of the one which was fixed for the 28th February next, but which fell through owing to Beach Jorfeiting by mistake. Melboubne, December 22. Mr Murray Smith, Agent General in London, telegraphs to the Government that he has seen Sir Robert Herbert, permanent secretary of the Colonial Office, and that that official doubts the reported German annexation of the northern portion of JVew Guinea ' and the island of New Britain, New Ireland, New Hanover, and the Admiralty Group. Mr Smith adds that the German Embassy in London has denied the truth of the information received to that effect.
