Melboubne, December 22. Mr Murray Smith, Agent General in London, telegraphs to the Government that he has seen Sir Robert Herbert, permanent secretary of the Colonial Office, and that that official doubts the reported German annexation of the northern portion of JVew Guinea ' and the island of New Britain, New Ireland, New Hanover, and the Admiralty Group. Mr Smith adds that the German Embassy in London has denied the truth of the information received to that effect.
