Mr McKenzie, of Poyntzfield, Para- ! wanui, has in his garden 275 named ' varieties of roses and 35 varieties of fuchsias. This is, we understand, the , largest collection in the colony. A benevolent man, who proves his wish to save time by throwing it away on foolish calculations, has discovered that in forty years a snuff- taker devotes twenty-four months to blowing his nose ! In Christchurch on Tuesday last, a man named Thomas Plaskett, while taking a load of coal from Coalgate to Hororata, fell off the dray, the wheel of which passed oyer his body, inflicting serious injuries. He died a few hours afterwards. Mr W. G. Haybittle has just received a fresh consignment of goods to which the inspection is invited by advertisement. The articles are nofel, and in mtvny instances remarkably beautiful, especially the china oraments and flower pots. Mr D. H. Macarthur, M.H.K., has received some of the seeds of the mulbury tree (morns alba) suitable for silkworm culture. He will be glad to supply any persons who will either make application in person or by letter, with a quantity. One great beauty of the law is its strict impartially ! This was shown in a case the other day where a plaintiff recovered £22 damages and after p^'ing his lawyers expenses which were £21 he received £1 for his share. This is what makes litigation so attractive to the ordinary mind. We have received the catalogue of thoroughbred yearlings, mares, and draught horses, the property of the New Zealand Stud and ledegree Company, which will be sold by auction by Messrs Hunter and Nolan, at the Ellerslie show grounds, Auckland, on Monday, the sth of January, 1885. A New South Wales telegram says : — An alarming recurrence of small pox has taken place in Sydney. Eleven cases are reported, and no less than 57 persons have been quarantined. The patients have been attended by Doctor Donald Donovan, who is to be prosecuted for not reporting the disease to the authorities. The New Zealand Clothing Factory Company have extended their " measure* ment to order" system to their Palmerston North branch. Customers can now have their measurements taken, and goods made up to their order at the same cost as the ready made articles. Mr Edward Johnston, formerly assistant at Wanganui, has been promoted to the manager* ship at Palnierston. The cases Towler v Bowler, and Bowler V Towler, which were the outcome of petty quarrels among neighbors, were partially heard yesterday. Mr Ward, the E.M., remarked on the absurdity of such matters being brought into court, and urgently requested the solicitors for the respective parties to endeavor to effect some reconciliation between the families. Mr Staite and Mr Esam, who appeared for the respective litigants, at once fell into the view* of Mr Ward, and the whole of the cases were withdrawn A meeting of the nominal council for the Oroua County was held on Tuesday last, at the Manchestei Koad Board office. Messrs Snelson, Tompkins, and Macarthur were present. The last named gentleman was appointed chairman. As it was necessary to appoint two other members to bring up the number of councillors to the legal number, a member from each local body was then nominated, and on a ballot being taken Messrs Lethbridgo and Willinmson were elected. The council then adjourned. A Palmerston exchange says: — The Salvation Army intend having a grand field day at Feilding on Tuesday next, when a monster Salvation tea meeting will be held. All the officers in the district will be gathered there, including Capt Perry and Lieut Rowlands, from Wanganui, and Capt Wilson and Lieut Hooper, from Palmerston. The Salvation Brass Band From Wanganui will also be in attendance, so that Feilding residents will be able to form a fair idea of the capabilities of the Army, A somewhnt singular accident occurred to David Dewar, of Milton, Dunedin, proprietor of a traction engine and threshing mill, on Tuesday last. He was camping for the night on Bound Hill, and baring disconnected the travelling gear, was intending to pump some water out of the engine. Being on an incline it started off with the mill behind and soon got to a great speed. A mnn named Kelly, <rho also on board, jumped off, but Dewar stuck to it until it run over an enbankment and capsized. He wn* severely crushed, and bad one rib severed Irom the backbone and three others fractured, and was badly cut and bruised. The engine and mill, &c. were completely wrecked. The agent of the Corporation has granted the use of the Immigration Bur racks to the young uiea of Feilding (o bo | used by them as a place where they may meet for various purposes of instruction | and amusement. We direct attention to an advertisement from the Feilding Brass Band, announcing a monster entertainment for Boxing Night. A mishap occurred at the Warwick street bridge works this morning. By some means the monkey ani frame got loose and tell forward riujht into the bed of the stream. Fortunately no harm happened to any of the workmen. All holders of policies of Life Insurance from the Government are requested to note the advertisement which appears in another column, anrnt the election of three persons to represent the- policyholders on the Central Board. Messrs Halcombe and Sherwill held a stock sale here this afternoon, which was well attended. There was an unusual quantity of slock yarded, especially of sheep. Prices appeared to have an upward tendency. The sale was not nearly over when we went to press. Captain Edwin telegraphs to-day: — Barometer— Further rise everywhere buc fulling soon at all places south of Kaikoura and Hokitika. Warnings for northerly gales hare been sent to all places south of Napier and New Plymouth. A most extraordinary instance in which a married w oiuan served her husband with a summons for debt cropped up recently (says the .New Zealand Times) in the Resident Magistrate's Court. The defendent did not appear, but the summons was returned with the endorsement that the summons had been served by the defendant's wife. Mr Wardell, R.M., of course accepted the service as correct.
