Feilding Borough Council
I * . I An ordinary meeting of the Council ; was held in the Council Chambers on Thursday evening last. Present-rthe Mayor, and Crs Richardson, Goodbehere, Worsfold, Loudon, Carthew, Thompson, Gichard, and Fowles. The minutes of the previous ordinary meeting were read, and after a slight amendment, were confirmed. A report of the Public Works Committee was to have been presented, re au alleged nuisan ce, but was not forthcoming. A short conversation ensued, but the Mayor said as the report was not in, nothing could be done at that meeting. He said the report should have been^^ presented as the matter was a very important one. A report from the Finance Committee reccommending the payment of accounts amounting to £124 6s 2d was read, and it was received and adopted. Cr Thompson called attention to the unsatisfactory state of the Wanganui hospital as represented by ft returned patient. He mentioned the meagre allowance of food, the sameness of the diet, no matter what the patient was suffering frem, and that there was no night attendant. It was understood that Cr Thompson would formulate his report, and that the Mayor would present it al the next quarterly meeting of the Hospital Cpm- - mittee. Mr Rotheram, District Eaiiway Manager, wrote re an appointment with the B i -rough Engineer to consult on the matter of widening Kimbolton road. A letter was read from Mr Haukins, re the Blackmore case, asking for instructions what to do in the matter of recovering the costs of the late action. The Mayor thought that as Mr Blackmore was threatening the Council with another action it was only fair to the burgesses generally that the Council should take steps to recover the £27 they had paid as costs -in this action. After some conversation the matter waa held over. A petition was read from the residents and property holders iu Port street, praying the Council to have said street formed and metalled. The Mayor expla-ucd that the works already recommended by the Pablio Works Committee, and sanctioned by the Council to be done out of the second instalment of the loan would leave nothing available for tbis work. Cr Richardson, who presented the petition, strongly supported it, urging the great need of the work being done and the large amonnt the property holders had spent on the road ont of their own pockets. Cr Carthew moved aud Cr Loudon soconded, That the petition be received. The Mayor after consulting the standing orders ruled that the matter being " under urgent circumstances" might be discussed at once, although no action could be taken at that meeting. The motion for receiving the petition was carried, and it was understood the matter would be discussed. at the next meeting. In answer to a question from Cr Loudon the Engineer aaid his plans and specifications for various worka in pursuance of a resolution of the Council would be presented at the next meeting. A report from the Engineer re the flooding of water on to Mr James Whis. ker's property was read. Mr Whisker here waited npon and addressed the Council on the matter of the diversion of the stream running through his properly, and explained the nature of the damage he was s offering in consequence of the said diversion. He answered several questions from the Mayor and Crs, and was thanked for his explanations. The Mayor sa : d the matter wonld have to be attended to by the Publie Works Committer, and a resolution to tbat effect was then passed. A monthly return from the Borough Poundkeeper was read, showing the number ot animals impounded to have been 95, the amount received for poundages £8 18s, and the amount to hand to the Council £4 14s. The Mayor called attention to the proposed Kiwitea embankments works, and asked the Council to pass a resolution on the matter. Cr Goodbehere moved and Cr Thompson seconded, That the Mayor be reques'ed to communicate "with the agent of the K. & C.A, Corporation with reference to the acquirement ol a piece of land for the purpose of straightening the Kiwitea stream above Kimbolton road bridge. — Carried. Cr Carthew called attention to the flooding of. the Makino stream, and the importance of the Council seriously considering the suggested diversion of the Makino into the Kiwitea. It wag resolved that the next meeting be held on Thursday the 18th inst. After the reading of the rough minutes the Council adjourned.
