MANCHESTER SQUARE.

TO THE EDITOB OF THE STAB. Sib, — "four correspondent " Around and Across the Square," has thought well to preface his letter on the above subject with some rather hypercritical and hair-splitting references to "your report " of the discussion on the matter in the Council. He denies that certain councillors "opposed the road • round the Square." What was intended in the report was, " the road round the Square ; merely," or " the plan which, only gave the road round the Square," and this, I am prepared to prove the said Councillors did strongly oppose. He goes on to say,^^ "No doubt your reporter ts' perfectly aware (the italics are mine) that the Wo plans submitted, &c, have roads round the Square plainly marked tnon them." In this assumption he is quite correct but I -was uot aware of it at the time of the discussion, nor indeed until after my notes were in the printer's hands, and being substantially correct there was no need of altering the words referred to. The simple facts of the case are as follows : Two alternative plans wero laid upon the Council table for consideration, your reporter not having seen them, and knowing nothing at all about them. Tho Councillors simply referred to them as " this plan and that plan," and it was ioi possible for any me, who had not seen them or heard them described, to say with, absolute certainty when "this" was meant and when " that." The plans wero not even numbered until the discussion had reached that point when, ifc was found necessary to call them soiiie- , thing respectively in order to get a resolution proposed upon on© of them. I may add that not even after the discussion wore the plans placed npon the reporter's table. I would here respectfully suggest that if the same facilities were given to the Press at the meetings of the Borough Council as are accorded at the meetings of some other public bodies, viz, of handing over to tlie reporter's table all resolutions and other documents immediately they are done with, some approximation might be made towards reporting upon them with even literal accuracy. — I am, &c, Youb Repobtbb.
