The Government
The Auckland Star is not very complimentary to the present Government. Writing on the changes of front Ministers hare been forced to make, the Star says : — The hostile opinions upon the District Railways Bill evoked at the Government caucus hare led to a third change of front, and the resolution substituted for the one last given notice of provides that any agreement the Government may make during the recess for the purchase of district railways shall be subject to the ratification of Parliament. It would appear that the Premier and Treasurer were rather staggered by the reception which the House gave to Mr Stout's threats, and by the tone of their own supporters with regard to the Ministerial proposals for acquiring these lines. The Government have, however, probably ascertained that their party is strong enough to carry the modified resolution. The disinclination to challenge a struggle with the Legislative Council exhibited in the acceptance of their amendment upen the East and Weßt Coast Railway Bill, and the modified tone assumed towards the sensibilities of the House re the District Eailways, signify pretty plainly that the Ministry feel that neither the time oor the issues are such as they can safely Btnke their Beats upon. They are longing for the security and seclusion of the recess.
