WARWICK STREET BRIDGE TENDERS.

TO THB EDITOB OP THE STAB. ' ' Sib, — Kindly allow me space in your columns to once more reply to Mr Hammond. I should not have troubled myself about Mr Hammond, had he not used ss much bluster to the Council. Oh no, Mr Hammond, we never thought you were an engineer. With reference to the paltry job, there is no doubt in ray mind bnt that it wonld be paltry enough when Mr Hammond had done with it if he built the bridge. Mr Htmmond says that I infer there is something that would hinder him from doing the work. The something is his not being mechanic enough to use the tools. That engineer business seems to stick in Mr Hammond's throat. Ido not expect an engineer to build the bridge, but as a large ratepayer I do expect it to be done in a thoroughly substantial and workmanlike manner, and I do not consider Mr Hammond competent to do it. I will give the reason why t When Mr Francis, contractor, was build* ing the Ruamahunga bridge, in the Wairarapa, Mr Hammond came and asked to be taken on. M r Francis pnt him on, and when we began to put the platform on the bridge Mr Francis set Hammond to put in some herringbone braces between the stringers on the piers — a very easy jobbut Mr Hammond could not do it. At the intersection I could lay my finger in. lat once went to Mr Francis, and told him to discharge Hammond, as I wonld not have him longer on the work. Mr Francis did discharge him, remarking to me at the time that it took him all his time to keep his eye oa Hammond. If Mr Hammond had taken the hint, this would not hare been let out. Perhaps he will emphatically deny this statement, which I can get substantiated by taking the trouble lo write to Mr Francis or Mr George Waterson, who were on the bridge at the time. — I am, &c. # W. E. Chambhblaut.
