THE BUNNYTHORPE JUNCTION.

TO THE EDITOE OP THE STAB. Sib, — The Manawatu Times is strongly advocating the alteration of the junction from Bunnythorpe to Palmerston ot the Napier- Woodville and Bunnythorpe line of railway. One argument used in its favor is that it will shorten tbe distanoe about 4| miles from Napier to Wellington. But they appear to ignore the existence of any other towns north, of Palmerston. It is very clear, according to their own showing of the distance, that travellers between Napier and any of those places between Palmerston ftnd Auckland would have to travel some fire miles farther tban they would if the jnnction was at Bunnythorpe, as originally intended. The traffic between the east and West coasts is likely to be mnch greater to the last mentionod places, as there is a far more extensive tract of country to the north of Palmerston than there is to the south of it. But independently of these arguments the Government are in justice bound to keep faith with those who purchased land in the Bunnythorpe district, as the land was sold to them with the understanding that the junction would be there, and eqnio* quently high prices were obtained for the land. Therefore tbe settlers are only asking for what tbey are justly entitled to. Tho Palmerston people have no claim to advance for tho alteration they are desirous of making. Palmerston has everything to gain, but nothing to lose by the change, while Bunnythorpe has everything to lose. Another and the strongest reason against the alteration is that land has been reserved for the railway from Ash* urst to Bunnythorpe, while I presume tho land would have to be purchased from the settlers from Ashurst to Palmerston. It is to be hoped that the petition sent front my fellow settlers against the proposed altera Lion to the Government last night will carry somo weight. —I am, Ac, BuNNYTHoara.
