New Zealand "Rising" ;
. — «■ It has frequently been asserted that a, gradual unheaval of portions of -the southern coast of Australia and of New Zealand is in progress, and some confirmation of tlii* theory has recently come to lijrht. In May last a prospecting party which visited Flinlers island observed indications in Banks' Straits and along' the adjoining coast line, which went to show that thu continuous earthquake disturbances which have gone on for many months on the ca^t coast oi Tasmania, and thence northerly and Cctsteiiy through . Minders Island, up to the southeastern extremity of Australia, have resulted in a perceptible unhpaval oi the . whole country. New Zealand papore, too, have reci-ufclv reported an upheaval ot the coast line in portions oY the southern island. It is stated, for instanc- 1 , that in the French .Pass, where the depth oi water, according to charf, is tw.-nty fa; horns, there are actually only ten fathom-. The necessity for a complete survey of these waters need not be insisted on. — An trio- New Zealander.
