The Ifouse met at 2.30 p.m. Mr Cowan gave notice to ask if Go* vernmpnt could make arrangements for issuing railway return tickets on othtr days besides Saturdays at these (Satnr* day) rates. Kepiying to Mr G. F. Richardson, the Hon. Mr Ballance said that a sum would be placed on the Estimates to meet the . case of those separated from their families, and who, by the order of the late Govern* raent in March last, were unexpectedly deprived of their right to nominate their wives and children left behind ia the Old Country. Replying to Mr Smith, the Ron. Mr Stout said when a school for agriculture came to be established in the North Island, as was the case in the South, the manufacture of cheese and butter could be provided for with the view of foster* ing that industry. Sir G. Grey introduced- tile Printer* and Newspaper Registration Act 1868 Amendment Bill. On the motion for the first reading, he explained that under existing circumstances anyone printing a book on paper to which the printer* name and address had not been attached was, along with the printer himselff liable to heavy penalties. The bill wwfftitended to remedy that hardship. if© thought it was a measure the Government might very properly take ovejj^ : Mr Macandrew remarked that hehopsd the bill would make provision fer the writer's name being appended to newspaper articles. The Hon. Mr Stout added, at ft for* ther suggestion, that a similar provision) should be made as to the names of Par- .. limentary newspaper correspondents. He promised the Government wosfcl assist in pushing the bill through. The House went into Committee ea the School Election Committee Bill. Several attempts were made to amend clause 7 so as to allow an elector to distribute his votes amongst candidates as he thinks fit, but none succeeded, and the clause passed as printed. In clause 16, an amendment was carried defining "householder" as one who resides in a district. The bill was reported with amendments. The False Notice of Births, Ao., Bill was reported with amendments. The House rose at 12 45 Sum.
