Political and General Notes

(Wanganui Chronicle's Correspondent.') Wellington, Sept. 16. Tuesday morning the North Island Trunk Railway Committee heid their ; second sitting. The witnesses examined ; hitherto have been Mr J. W. Ivlurchant, ! Commissioner of Lands, Wellington ; Mr j E. J. Gill, Lands Purchase Department, WeUington ; Mr J. McEerrow, Surveyor General ; and Mr J. Blackett, Engineer-in-Chief for the North Islands. The ' committee are now again sitting. They are not likely to get through their work in the fourteen days allotted to them, but will want various xetensions of time.

Mr George Fisher, M.H.R. for South Wellington, and Mayor of Wellington, was yesterday pronounced out of danger, and is about to take a short holiday to recruit his health before resuming his parliamentary duties. He has been dangerously ill from overwork, and over anxiety during the late election. The report, however, of h s having had brain fever, and having lost his memory, is, he tells me, quite untrue. The New Zealaud Times yesterday published a spirit message from a spiritualistic seance, that the Mnnapouri, Union steamer, had been wrecked and was ashore between Cape Palliser and Castlepoint. The spirit, however, did not seem to know his business, for yesterday morning the Manapouri came safe into harbour, without having been wrecked or having gone ashore anywhere. There was a good deal of amusement at the expense of the New Zealand Times and its spirited proprietor. The Aoiangi came in yesterday evening with the engines for the Mamiwutu railway on board. This will probably hasten the opening of the first sectiou of the live.
