The Northern Trunk Railway
We are informed by wire that at a meeting of the Wellington and Hawke's Bay members yesterday morning, nine being present (seven Wellington and two Hawke's Bay); it was decided to
-agree to < the nomination of three Southern members on the committee to consider the best route for the North Island railway. With respect to the railway between Wellington .and Na-
pier, it was decided to wait until the financial proposals of the Government were before the House, and that then a deputation should be appointed to wait on the Government urging the consideration of this line. Although the Wellington and' Hawke's Bay members may have settled this matter very much to their own satisfaction, yet if ihey have failed to take; into their confidence, and secure the support of, the' Auckland members, they will be practically powerless to effect their object. Auckland' is quite as much interested in- opening up the centre of this island as Wellington, and the absence of any of her members from the meeting appears singular, to say the leapt of it. [Since the above was in type a telegram has come to hand by which we learn that the Auckland 'Chamber of Commerce has taken a most decided action. They have declared against the so-called central route, in a most emphatic manner. It will now be interesting •to f watch -whether the Wellington Chamber .of Commerce will ' c , wake up " and answer the challenge thrown out by their Auckland rivals.]
