To illustrate how completely «me peoplo are tit the mercy of domestics, a correspondent, who resides in the neighbourhood 6f Hamps'tead Fleath sends ma the -. following amusing narrative : — " Arriving home rather late a.few nights back, J was accosted by a policemaa who was hanging; about outside iriy gate •—''Beg'' pardon, sir ; , but are you aware of the goings-on of your servant*?' 'No: what do you mean V I said rather sharply*- \ Well, sir,, it's juat this ; "• there ain't one on 'em about ihe p ace.' *(»h, nonsense/ I said. 'Why they've. all been in bed and asleep these two hours.' /Excuse me, sir, but if you'll follow me I'll soon convii ce you^that yqu haven't a .servant in your house.' Seeing that the man was serious, I ' followed him to a certain dancing saloon not very far away. I' had' little difficulty in gaininq: admittance, and there, : sui;e e'nouuh, were cook, "housemaid. . ar^'d nurse d-sporting^ themselves .in the msizy valse. : 'i'lie uurse was the; first to ''spot" me. and I at once began .to >] T ■naonstrate I with her tor': neglecting her special charge—a child in arm's.
