The Flood
The heavy rainfall attendant upon the strong south-easterly wind which came on yesterday has again resulted in a partial flood. Train communication with Wanganui was interrupted this morning. Heavy slips on the Turakina hill, and floods at Matarawa prevented the north and south trains meeting, so the passengers and mails had to be returned to the several stations they started from. As the rainEall is still heavy we do not expect that damages will be repaired for some days, although this is of course mere conjecture. '1 he Makino is rapidly rising, and threatens to complete the destruction of the Manchester street bridge, notwithstanding the temporary repairs which were started, to make good the damage done by the flood last week. In some parts of the district the streams are already higher than at that time. The Oroua and Manawatu rivers are also reported as rising, and we fear the lossjin live stock may be considerable. ■
