BENEVOLENT SOCIETY.

TO T&E EDITOR Or TflK STAB

Sir";— t sftw ih a late issue of your paper that you bad a severe local upoa the officers of the Benevolent Society, inasmuch as, you say, "Several cases of distress in the Borough bave been reported from time' to time within the past month, yet the Benevolent Society .has remained persistently inactive." t am glad, however to be able to state that the Benevolent Society in tbis instance has been doing good by stealth. Tbe amount disbursed by the Society upon one of the cases yon refer to has been £3, and on other cases tbat have not come before the public, about £5 10s. These amounts have now exhausted the available funds of the Society, and left it £2 6s 9d in debt. It is a matter for congratulation tbat tbe assistance of tbe Society bas not been required for so long a period (nearly two years), and tbat possibly is tbe cause of the institution not being in so flourishing a condition as it would otherwise have been had its services been more frequently required. I may state for the information of any charitably disposed, persons that if they wonld pass their charity through the medium ef the Society ft wonld enable the Society to claim from the Government an equivalent sum. They would thus double their well doing. Kindly insert this in your paper to show the public that tbe Society bas not altogether been idle. —I am, die.

HroH L. Sa ERwiLL, Hon. Treasurer.
