POLTCE PROSECUTIONS AND HOTELDEEPERS.

TO THE KDITOII OF THE STAR

Sir, — Your correspondent ".Resident," who has not the manliness to give his niune says, I was one of the defendants on Wednesday last. Why does ho not truthfully adil, that the false information laid ngaiust mo completely failed, and the charge was at once dismissed. He asks if I can prove the false swearing of the witnesses, whom the constable relied on, and whom he (the constable), forsooth, would not allow me to speak to before the court commenced. I at once accept the challenge, and beg to inform " .Resident" and his friend, whose cause he champions, that several reliable witnesses could prove the absolute falsity of the evidence upon which the two convictions against the hotelkeeyers were obtained. I will now go a little further, and add that out of twelve informations only two convictions were obtained by Constable Gillespie, and these two as I have said, on false evidence, for the three charges of drunkenness were not disputed by the defendants. " Resident" sneers at "publicans and sinners." No doubt he is a Pharisee, and as such too good for Feilding. As I have called the attention of Constable Gillespie's superior officeisto the matter. " Resident" may have an opportunity of showing his sympathy as a "right-minded resident." — I am, &c, W. S. Staite.
