DEFEAT OF HANLAN.

The sculling match between Han« lon, of Toronto, Canada, and William Beach, of Sydney, for £500 and the championship of the world, took place-to-day over the regular coarse on the Parramatta Eiver. The weather was magnificent, but the waterwas slightly rough. A splendid start was effected, * a dead level being maintained for the first quarter -ef a mile.- Hanlotf then iprged ahead, and when a mile' and a quarter had been covered, was about a length in advance. Beach, however, responded, and rowed right down on Hanlon. The latter allowed his boat, to cross, and a foul took place. Han.-.; lon put up his hands, and claimed a foul. Beach, however, kept pulling away. Hanlon followed, but Beaten came to the post an easy winner by five or six lengths. Time, 20min 26secs. The umpired disallowed the • foul churned by Hanlon.
After the race on Saturday a most cordial interview took place between Beach and Haixlon.. The latter admitted he was beaten, but said he was paralysed by the close proximity of the steamer TomK, which,' unfortunately, bore down too close to his boat.
An immense coneoxirse irf people witnessed the boat race on Saturday, no less than ; 63 steamers being crowded with spectators. Great enthusiasm was displayed here over Beach's victory. It. is thought for certain that another match wOl be arranged. :,<..., . '.
