The New Ministry

With very few- exceptions the Press of the colony views with regret and disappointment the construction of the new Government. It is justly considered that an error has been made in giving the South Island such a predominance in the Cabinet. This will be found -to be a great weakness, and will ultimately lead to its overthrow. The country was prepared to welcome an Atkinson- Vogkl combination with opin arms. Public opinion on this point has been so freely, expressed that the wonder is Sir Julius Vogei, did not endeavor to coalesce with Major Atkinson. The position now' is an extremely difficult one. The Dunedin Herald sajs unless Sir Juliits can form a fairly representative and truly colonial Government, he may just as well give up the attempt, for no other Government could long weather the storm which would . be sure to be raised by provincial jealousy. The outlook, it must be confessed, is not very bright, but there is .happily; something to. hope for in the character of the House, which is on al| hands admitted to be greatly superiorto its predecessor. • The Auckland Herald thinks "the dnly combination that could ptMsibly furnish a really strong adminisi t rat ion -is that of the 'supporters of Sir Jutitfs with'-the old Ministerial party." It goes ou to argue in favor of a V<jgel ; Atkinson coalition. ,
