The Feilding Star. THURSDAY 'AUGUST 14, 1884. Railway Freight on Milk
— : *"~ T A so-galled concession has been made by the railway authorities to dairy factories by reducing the freight on milk from f d to |d per gallon for distances of 15 miles and under, and -|d per gallon for each additional mile or fraction thereof.*': It is heedless to say that this "concession, which may 'appear liberal/because 50 per cent, is taken off, fails, to give satisfaction to the dairy companies. Their reasons aro not ■ gi jen, for probably the directors have only a vague sense of being subjected to an excessive charge withont any accurate knowledge of how it comes about or how it is to be remedied. " There is only one way out of the difficulty, and that is to give up the old world fashion of carrying milk at per gallon. Let it be carried in the same way as beer or any other liquid — by the deadweight at per ton. There is no earthly reason why any distinction should be made. The authorities would take as much care in the one instance as the other. They would also benefit more, for two freights would be secured, viz., that of taking the milk to the factory and of taking the manufactured article to the market. In the case of beer there is only one freight, and the advantages of this article of commerce to the general public are not admitted on all sides, while the establishment of dairy companies is a known benefit to the whole Colony. The present rate is within a fraction per ton of class A for 15 miles. We learn from the Chronicle that Mr Ballance, M.H.8., proposes to interview the Minister of Public Works on the matter. We hope that Mr Macarthur will assist him , in this matter, and give effect to our suggestion.
