Much damage was done to property in the path of the storm and several persons were killed by .lightning. Lord LanderduJe, who was - out shooting during the storm, was struck by lightning and now lies in a precarious condition. I Lokdon, August 12. The death is announced of the Right Rev. Piers Claughton, D.D.. formerly , Bishop of" S€ Helena and of Colomb®. Afire occurred to-day at a hatter's j shop in Pimlico, and caused the death of > four persons who were unable to escape] from the burning building. Two others leaptfrpm the -windows. an 4 were seri- • ouslyinjuried. Sir Evelyn Wood will probably command the expedition which it is pro- : posed to despatch to Khartoum in j October for the relief of General Gordon and garrison. Caibo, August 11. Preparations for the despatch of the Soudan expedition are being prosecuted wth great energy. A thousand rowboats have been ordered for the service of the expedition, nnd will assemble at Wady Haifa in October. New Yoek, August 11. A sharp shock of earthquake occurred yesterday over an extensive portion of this country. The effect nas felt from Maryland to Maine, and extended inland as far as the Alleghany Mountains. A considerable amount of damage was done to the buildings in various places, but no persons have been killed or seriously injured.
