•■■ . ■ m :.:■'. In pursuance of a resolution passed at the Feildtng I&ron^h,Council meejing on Thursday evening last, a public meeting was held t in the Town : Hall' last evening, for the purpose of discussing the advisableness of having a .complete surrey made of the Central Bailway Boujteifrom Feilding up the Kiwilea or Oroua Vallej. There was a large attendance and considerable interest was .manifested. 'Hi* Worship the Mayor presided, and. explained the object of the meeting. He referred to the former meetings which had been held on the cabject, and the hasty surrey .which had been made of the' Oroua Valley Boute by Mr Rochefort in fulfilment of the numerons promises of the Government, and after further remarks called upon Mr Macartbur, M'H.B. . J Mr Macarthur said .he had very little information to give further than they had already received. The pretended survey of the Oroua Valley route was a very hasty one, and could, r only have been given to pacify the people, while Mr Bochefort" could not possibly have had time to .prepare a proper report of his ■urvey iu/order to lay it before PSrlia-, ment The survey could not have been otherwise than very/unsatisfactory, »?d was' evidently only. ; made to fulfil the promises of the Government. Hethouyht it very desirable ' that a proper and thorough sur^ey.of the route Bhou|d.be ( made, and he desired to have his hinds strengthened by the settlers when tha time would, come for him to bring the matter before Parliament. He would ask someone to move-* resolution on the subject. Mr Le'thbridge moved, That this meeting is -of. opinion that the exploration wfiich hasbeeifmade of the Oroua Vrlley route of the .Central Bail way .has been of too hasty a nature to be satisfactory, and that our member, ' Mr Macarthur, be re- ■* quested to, urge upon the. Government the absolute' necessity of making a fur therand thorough survey before deciding upon any particular route. -■ : Mr P. Bartholomew seconded ; the mo*-. tioji. ■ . . ' . Mr Wright, C.E., in speaking to the motion said that Mr Bochefort could not possiblj hare made a proper survey «f the route la the time ; he occupied. He had authority for saying that the bridge , that would be reqwedoyer the Bangi' tikei was thoroughly practicable.- He strongly supported the - motion, which .mfter a little further discussion was put to the meeting and carried unanimously. jj^ jft*» of thanks to -the chairman ;•;; :•
