Feilding Borough Council

An ordinary meeting of the Council was held in the Council Chambers on Thursday evening. Present — The Major, and Crs Goodbehere, Worrfold, Carthew, Fowl- s, Thompson, and Higgin. The minutes of the previous ordinary meeting were read and confirmed. The Mayor read copy of a letter he had written to the various local bodies in the district in application for aid re the Cemetery in accordance witb resolution passed at the last meeting of the Council. The monthly' report of the Finance Committee, including the passing of accounts to the amount of £110 4s 12d, waa i read and adopted. A letter was read from W. Reading asking on behalf of the Variety Company and Brass Band for the patronage of the Council to an entertainment in aid of the unfortunate Wells family. • . *..,.■ The Mayor said it was a worthy object and had his hearty sympathy. He would willingly give his own patronage, and had no doubt the Council would do the same. A resolution to the effect was then passed. The term of Mr E. Worsfold's engagement for lighting the street lamps having expired, it was resolved that the Town Clerk make arrangements with ', the huh;:lighter to continue the engagement for one year on the same terms and conditions as before. 7 ,/ ) ,'r. The following tenders for clearing the Cemetery were opened:— W- Hammond LlO 10s ; A. Diamond Ll2 ;T. M ilvan L9; R. Brown LlOlO. The following tendered at per acre :— ;J. McLeod lis Ufd; A. Guthrie Ll; Tarrant arid Benjamin Ll ls ; Noble and Cornwall L2. The tender of Mr McLeod was accepted. . . ! •■ The Council agreed that the cabbage trees growing in the Cemetery should be left standing. 7- ; Cr Higgin called attention to one or two instances in which certain places must inevitably become a nuisance as soon as the warm weather set in, and expressed his opinion that some action should be taken by the Council to avert a possible injury to the public health. He instanced one or two places in particular wbich were even now in a very unhealthy state, and suggested that the Town Clerk be instructed to call the attention of the Inspector of Nnisances to tlie matter. After a conversation it was understood the matter would be looked into. The Mayor reported that he had interview Mr Macarthur on the matter of the Orona Valley Route for the Main Trunk Railway, and the latter had expressed his dissatisfaction at the hasty survey which had been made, and wished the matter. to be brought before the Council. He bad also called attention to . the fact that Mr Marchant, the District Surveyor, had expressed his opinion that a very desirable route lay along the valley ot the Kiwitea. Mr Macarthur hud also suggested that the Mayor call a public meeting on Monday next, for the purpose of discussing the matter previous to the sitting of Parliament. The Mayor thought such a movement very desirable and in this the Council agreed. It was then move:! by Cr Goodbehere „ seconded by Cr Higgin, That tue Mayor be requested to call a public meeting in the Public Hall on Monday next for the purpose of discussing the Central Rail* way Route.— Carried. Resolved, That the temporary assistance to the Wells family be continued till the next sitting of tbe Council. Mr W. Hammond waited upon the Council to ascertain if any further means could be used for preventing the. water drai»ing on to his premises in West street. He laid before the Council a plan of the locality, showing the direction in which the water ran, and stated that it was doing considerable damage ;to his property. . ? It was resolved. That the matter complained of by Mr Hammond be referred to the Public Works Couaiiiittee.. The Mayor asked the . advice of. the Council as to what should belaid before the other local bodies re the cemetery -in case they should request definite suggest tions, but it was agreed' that nothing be done till replies had been received; ' \ Cr Thompson called attention to the' fact that the Ranger had complained of hisduties being nullified by the interference of persons when -animals' wei^be^g driven by him to .the pound, such persons alleging that- the animals' were 5 iii their phprge. . ... „... 1 The general feeling of the Council wai tbat this was a difficult matter to decide' upon, and. mnst be left to the discretion . of the Ranger. ; Resolved, That the next meeting ofthe Council be held on Thursday, August 14th.
