Mr Stevens at Makino

Owing to some error in dates the meetings both for Makino and Beaconsfield were called for wrong evenings. Mr Stevens' committee however were equal to the occasion, and at a late hour oa Thursday afternoon despatched a mounted messenger to the electors resident in Makino, asking them to meet the candidate that evening at 7.30, but owing to the impossibility of informing everyone interested in such a short time, and the inclement state of the weather, all did not attend, but a fairly representative gathering listened to an address from Mr Stevens, which occupied an hour and twenty minutes. In fact his Marton address was repeated at Makino schoolhouse. The same gentleman asked— lf elected will yon support the reading qf the Bible in schools. Answer— No. My mind is fully made up upon that point. Mr Donald Munro— Are you in favor of Federation. Answer—No ; and here ensued a long, explanation on the subject, which has ''• also already appeared. Mr Munro proposed, and Mr Ronald. Cameron seconded the following unanimously :— That this meeting thinks Mr Stevens a fit and proper person to. represent Rangitikei in the House of Assembly, having every confidence in him. A cordial vote of thanks to Mr Fry for his kindness in presiding closed ob_ of Mr Stevens many pleasant election meetings in Rangitikei County.
