The Chicago Convention has nominated Cleveland as Democratic candidate for the Presidency, and Hendricks for the Vice-Presidency. The sittings of the Convention has now been ndjourned. London. July 12. Lord Euston has abandoned his petition praying for a divorce. The Liberals are organising an immense agitation in the provinces with a view to intimidating the members of the House of Lords. A large amount is being subscribed, but the Lords are confident that the country will recognise their willingness (? unwillingness) to pass the Franchise Bill. The prospectus of the newly-formed Oriental Bank Company will be published to-morrow. It is not likely that the lis" of contributories will be settled before the long vacation takes place. The protectorate over New Guinea, being issued without jurisdiction over foreigners, is deemed unsatisfactory. The Agents-General are urging England to extend the jurisdiction to the adjoining islands. Several wheat cargoes from Australia have been sold at 38s 6d. London, July 14. Intelligence has been received that a number of Abyssinian chiefs are about to visit England for the purpose of bringing an elcphunt to the Queen as a present from King Johannes. Serious rioting between Orangemen and Catholics has taken place in Cumberland. The fighting was very severe and resulted in one man heing shot and fifty wounded. The disturbance was only quelled by the interreniion of a large body of police.
