Secretary notified that he hoped to be able to order a farther svpply of books before tbe expiration of tbe current year. Mr R. S. Abraham tendered his resignation, which was accepted with many expressions of regret hy the members present. The Ber. J. C. Dodwell haa been asked by Mr Wi'son, manager of Rhodes' estate, to hold divine service at Heaton Park as often as convenient. Mr Dodwell bas therefore arranged to hold ser* vice thew once a week. The first service took place on Wednesday evening last, whsn over fifty assembled to hear tbe rev. gentleman. Mr Maudsley, who succeeds Mr Abraham, has arrived, aad is now taking over the business and being introduced to the customers. Good progress is being made with the protective works near the mouth of the rir-rr. . The groin opposite Mr D. Scott's bou*« is nearly finished. I hear that M r T. Scott is still in a verf critical state, an<l suffers great agony. In moving here a few days ago the fractured leg became displaced, necessitating a resetting.! . liuiuour says that.a prominent solicitor in the Rangitikei County has deemed it necessary to seek the protection of the Bankruptcy Court. Two bachelors, who have been carefully: attending to tne diet of a wild pig that ona of them succeeded in capturing at Easter time, decided that it was time his pigship was converted into bacon, so made all necessary arrangements for a grand sticking match. But having a few doubts as to the most correct way of proceeding they invited a few friends to a«*ist at the auspicious affair. ** In the multitude of counsellors there is safety" is an old proverb, but the two bachelors have their doubts about that, for the way th#ir friends mauled, that pig mho A was astonishing- .first one declaied the water was too hot, another said it was too cold, another, that there was not enough, ani co on. but ultimately" the hair was removed with not a small quantity of the hide, it was dressed the great d ifficulty !>e*an for those two 100-generous bachelor* discovered that they had promsed to their numerous friends three legs, two sides, four hams, and two heads, the •nly portion left fur themselves being tbe tail and trotters, and how they are to fulfil the whole of their pledges is a problem not jet solved. It has' been decided to give a farewell promenade concert to Mr and Mrs I brabam. It is to take place on Friday, tbe 80th inst., and promises to be a big succe*s, as all the leading talent in tbe county if to take part therein.
