bextteb's telegbams. London, June 12. Tho race for the Ascot Cup was run to-day, and resulted as follows : — Simon 1, Tristan 2, Faugh-a-Ballagh. The wool sales closed firmly to-ngiht. 355,000 bales were catalogued, of which upwards of half were taken for export, anel 37,000 were withdrawn. Good superior merino and greasy fleece show an improvement on March closing prices. Crossbreds have recovered from £d to ld on opening rates. Scoured wools are slightly lower than at last sales. Faulty Victorian and Sydney shipments show a decline of from fd to ld. New York, June 11. The forthcoming election to the Presi-. dency of the United States continues to excite considerable interest in all parts of the country. The Hon. Samuel J. Tidden has been requested to contest the election but declined to otter himself as a candidate. Bbussels, June 12. In consequence of the defeat of the Liberal party at the general elections to the Chamber of Representatives, the Ministry have tendered their resignation to the King. Foochow, June 12. The lea market is now fairly active. The quality of the new season's supplies is considered better than last season's. Prices for tine to finest qualities are from three to four taels below last year's rates. For common qualities the prices are about j the same as last season.
